Cambodia water Festival

November 23

water festival

The Water Festival (Bon Om Touk) is Cambodia’s largest and most important national event, celebrated every year in late October or November during the full moon, and it lasts for three days. The festival marks the unique moment when the Tonlé Sap River changes its flow direction, signaling the end of the rainy season and the beginning of a new fishing and farming cycle. Events usually begin early in the morning and continue until late at night, with the main attraction being the spectacular dragon boat races, where long, colorful boats powered by dozens of rowers compete on the river. In the evenings, the celebration continues with illuminated boats, fireworks, traditional music, food stalls, and large crowds along the riverbanks, especially in Phnom Penh. The festival has a history dating back to the Angkor era, when it was connected to royal ceremonies and the strength of the kingdom’s navy. Today, Bon Om Touk is not only a sporting and cultural celebration, but also a symbol of unity, gratitude for water and nature, and Cambodian cultural identity.
